Dr Deasyanti Adil – whose husband and children moved from Jakarta, Indonesia to Darwin so she could complete her post-graduate studies at CDU – has won a prestigious prize from the Faculty of Law, Education, Business and Arts.

At the prize-giving ceremony for Casuarina campus students on 31 May Dr Adil – who received her doctorate last October – accepted the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Award for PhD Thesis Excellence.

Her thesis was titled “Listening to Student Voices: Factors Affecting Well-being in School”.

“I was very excited to receive this award,” Dr Adil said.

“And I am grateful to all the staff in the School of Education, especially to Associate Professor Greg Shaw who helped me so much during the four years it took to complete my PhD.”

Education Associate Professor Sue Smith said she was delighted and proud that Dr Adil had returned to Darwin from Jakarta to accept the award.

“As with many international students the higher degree by research road is a long one with much family sacrifice,” she said.

Since graduation Dr Adil – who received her bachelor and master degrees from the University of Indonesia – has returned to State University of Jakarta as a lecturer in educational psychology and is the head of guidance and counselling services there.

She remains connected to CDU via research projects, especially the Race, Religion and Respect in Initial Teacher Education (3RITE) project that is supervised by Dr Smith.

The Faculty of Engineering, Health, Science and the Environment Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Thesis Excellence award went to Dr Helen Wozniak for her “Get ready, get learning: Supporting health science students to learn from their experiences online” thesis.
